biography

Jo Chate makes paintings that explore the space between the real and the imagined. They are largely landscape based with the feel of memory. Urban spaces, inhabited spaces, peripheral spaces. The environs passed though, things seen momentary glimpses, fragments.

She uses photography and found images often painting on them in the working out of ideas. During the process of painting a transformation occurs. The everyday subtly shifts towards something less familiar. It is in the fluidity of paint that reality slips into something else, somewhere else.

The work transcends the ordinary but keeps something of the origin as it combines with thought and memory. The aim is to keep the work open and exploratory – to remain open to possibility in the painting and open to possibility for the viewer.

Varying elements are incorporated and reconfigure in the work to pave the way for a new kind of reality. The paintings unfold in a transitory state as they progress through the process of making and doubt, thought and immediacy. And while each painting stands on its own when they are seen together there is a suggestion of narrative.

Jo lives and works in London.
